St Patrick's College in Northern Cape is this year's winners of the National Productivity Institute';'s schools debating competition.
The event was recently held at the Groenkloof campus of the University of Pretoria.
It is an initiative of the National Productivity Institute (NPI), which was partnered by the University of Pretoria to make the competition possible.
The aim of the competition is to create a platform for grade 11 pupils from schools around the country to question and review both local and international business models and trends.
It challenges participants to become more dynamic thinkers, armed with the knowledge and skills they will need to perform well in South Africa's diversified economy.
The competition is also intended to prepare the participants to compete on a global platform.
The debating competitions were staged with the assistance and partnership of all the provincial departments of education.
"Developing future business players is important in building our competitive ability as a country," said Yvonne Dladla, an executive director at the NPI.
"This project provides students with an opportunity to develop public speaking and topic-presentation skills and self-confidence.
"We believe these skills become critical for learners as they further their studies and also during their future working lives."
St Patrick's College received prize money of R20000.
The runners-up, Letsibogo Girls High School in Gauteng, received R10000, and Pogiso Mthimunye, from Modiri High School in North West, was awarded a prize for being the best speaker.
Well-known TV personality and kwaito music artist Sbu Leope, aka Mzekezeke, gave a motivational talk to the young people who attended the event.
Famous hip-hop artist Pitch-Black Afro entertained the crowds.
