Full force in cash heist

Frank Maponya and Tebogo Tshipi

Two security guards escaped unharmed when the car in which they were transporting money was forced off the road.

The incident happened at 4am yesterday when the Fidelity Guard vehicle was on its way to deliver a large quantity of money to Tzaneen, from Polokwane.

The unknown suspects were travelling in two BMWs, a Mercedes and a 4x4 bakkie.

They allegedly fired several shots and rammed the security vehicle, forcing it to stop at Makgeng village, near Boyne, about 40km from Polokwane.

Superintendent Ronel Otto said the suspects forced the two guards out of the vehicle, disarmed them and put them in the boot of the BMW.

"The suspects used the security vehicle to burst through a brick wall of a dumping site.

"They used a cutting torch to open the security vehicle and took an undisclosed amount of money," Otto said.

She said the suspects fled the scene in a BMW and a bakkie, leaving behind a BMW and a Mercedes. The vehicles have since been established as stolen.

The security guards freed themselves from the boot of the vehicle and the police were alerted.

No arrests have been made.
