A man suspected of being the serial rapist said to have forced one of his victims to carry him on her back across a flooded river before raping her has been arrested.

He is suspected of raping a dozen women in Mpumalanga since April.

Four of the victims identified the arrested man as their attacker at an identification parade at Hazyview police station on Friday.

Among the victims were three women whom the man is said to have met while they were walking along a footpath to their village.

He allegedly forced them at gunpoint to turn back and ordered one of the women, aged about 26, to carry him on her back across a flooded river.

He made the other two women watch while he raped the woman.

He allegedly robbed them of their cellphones and fled.

The man is also accused of attempted murder. He allegedly shot a man in the arm and then raped his girlfriend.

Hazyview police spokesman Captain John Mbambo said the suspect was arrested on Thursday after a tip-off and appeared in the Hazyview magistrates' court the following day.

He was not asked to plead on charges of rape, attempted murder and theft.

He has been remanded until his next court appearance, which will be on November 16.

"Three more victims are expected to identify the suspect during another identification parade on Friday.

"We are calling on more rape victims to come and identify him," said Mbambo.
