Minerals and energy minister Buyelwa Sonjica yesterday welcomed the cabinet's decision to approve the restructuring of the R25billion electricity distribution industry.
"The cabinet took a major decision to restructure the industry by creating six regional electricity distributors," saidSonjica, who was briefing industry and government stakeholders in Johannesburg.
Power outages, which occurred "on almost a daily basis" because of lack of maintenance of infrastructure and other inefficiencies, cost between R2,6billion and R8billion a year.
In the past 10 years there had been an infrastructure maintenance backlog of R5billion, Sonjica said.
Fragmentation, caused by Eskom and the country's 187 municipalities serving the same customers, had "resulted in 2000 tariff regimes". - Sapa
