Visionary who helped establish the Lotto will be remembered for his expertise and kindness

The visionary attitude of prominent South African businessman Humphrey Khoza will be missed.

The visionary attitude of prominent South African businessman Humphrey Khoza will be missed.

So, too, will his kindness, said long-time friend Zanele Nhlayisi, spokesman for the Khoza family.

She was speaking at the Khozas' home in Hurlingham on Saturday night, when friends and family gathered to mourn his death. He was killed in a car crash on Friday night.

Khoza, 59, died when he was thrown from his car when it hit a sign post on the wet N12-east near the Comaro Road off-ramp, Alberton, at 9pm, said an Ekurhuleni metro police spokesman, Inspector Johnny Nhlapo.

At the time of his death Khoza was a consultant to Nigeria's state lottery contractor, Orion Technologies. He took on the job so that he could spend more time with his wife Thandi, his son Kennedy, his daughter Carol and his four grandchildren.

To his family he was a compassionate and strong man.

His death has devastated Thandi, his wife of more than 30 years, said Nhlayisi. The couple met at high school.

When not with his family, he played golf.

He loved the outdoors and preferred holidays in the bush, Nhlayisi said.

Born on October 2 1947 in Kwadukathole, Germiston, Khoza enrolled for a bachelor of science degree at the University of Zululand in 1969, but had to give up his studies two years later because of lack of money.

He also studied at the Shell Business School in the UK and at the Stellenbosch Business School. He completed an entrepreneurial course in the US.

Khoza had been on the boards of at least 18 South African companies.

He will be remembered for his role in Uthingo, the South African Lotto concessionaires.

Uthingo's management was "privileged" to have benefited from his management expertise and guidance, said chief executive Oupa Monamod.
