Airport renaming is victory for freedom

The renaming of Johannesburg International Airport is indeed a victory for our hard fought freedom and young democracy.

The renaming of Johannesburg International Airport is indeed a victory for our hard fought freedom and young democracy.

When we welcome the world in 2010 we must be able to explain who OR Tambo was and why he canvassed for international sport sanctions against South Africa. And we must uphold his legacy.

The changing of names is a sign of victory after a long, tough war, so we owe no one an apology.

The Chris Hanis and Solomon Mahlangus of this world fought hard, under Tambo's leadership, for our freedom and should accordingly be honoured.

I commend Ekurhuleni mayor Duma Nkosi, who in 2003 tabled a proposal to rename Africa's biggest airport in honour of Tambo, who lived in the township of Wattville, near Benoni.
