St Luke's Anglican Church in Evaton, Vereeniging, yesterday celebrated 100 years of existence..

The church was founded in 1906 by the residents and the celebration of a century of worshipping the Almighty was held at the church .

The original church, which still exists, was a small building built from rocks.

But another building, which was opened in 1919, is used for worshipping.

Bishop Peter Lee held a short prayer at the old building. The congregation then moved to the building they now use for the church service.

"It is with great joy that I celebrate 100 years with you [the congregants] in this holy building," Bishop Lee said.

Sowetan's regional editor Charles Mogale, who is a parishioner and church organist, accompanied the singing.

The church last month had a gala dinner and an auction to raise funds to build a community purpose centre.
