The death of six people in a horrific accident on the N1 highway in Johannesburg yesterday has brought the number of road deaths in the country at the weekend to 22 - including four infants.
Johannesburg emergency services spokesman Malcolm Midgley said the six were killed when the driver of a red Mazda travelling north between 14th Avenue and Beyers Naude Drive, lost control of the vehicle, veered across the centre island into oncoming traffic. The car smashed at speed into two vehicles, including a bus going in the opposite direction.
Midgley said two children - aged five and three-months - and their parents, all occupants in the red car, were killed.
Two occupants of the bus, including the driver, were also killed.
Midgley said five people, including an 18-month-old child, survived the horror crash. The child was airlifted to the Chris Hani-Baragwanath Hospital.
Veteran journalist Marja Tuit said it was possibly the worst road accident she had seen.
"There was nothing left of the red car. It was crumpled up like in the movies," said Tuit.
In other accidents in the country during the weekend:
l Three children - aged 12, six and five months - were killed in an accident on the road between Oudtshoorn and Calitzdorp in the Western Cape.
l A 36-year-old man was killed in a hit-and-run on the N2 between Idutywa and Butterworth in the Eastern Cape yesterday morning.
l One man died and another was seriously injured when the driver lost control of the car and it overturned near Zastron, Free State, yesterday.
l Also in the Free State, police fished out six bodies trapped in a car under a bridge on the Abrahamskraal Road between Petrusburg and Dealesville on Saturday.
l One person was killed on Louis Botha Drive in Florida, Roodepoort, on Saturday when two vehicles collided. Two people survived.
l A five-month-old baby died and 15 passengers were injured on the Leondale off-ramp, Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg, on Saturday after the driver of the taxi in which they were travelling lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn.
l In Umhlanga, KwaZulu-Natal, a 54-year-old cyclist died on Saturday after he was hit by a car driven by a 19-year-old.
l A three-week-old baby was killed near Cradock, Eastern Cape, on Saturday when the vehicle overturned after the driver lost control of the car on a sharp bend.
l Humphrey Khoza, former boss of Uthingo, was killed in a car accident on Friday in Ekurhuleni, Johannesburg.
