Athletics Gauteng North successfully appealed against the wrong placing of one of their athletes at the 10km National Championship on Saturday.

"When the top 20 athletes were announced, we realised that the twentieth lady's time was slower than Catherine Nkosi's time and immediately appealed," said team Manager Pieter de Jager.

"The mistake was corrected and Catherine was immediately reinstalled, although we don't know at this stage in which position she came in."

De Jager said Nkosi would have lost her prize money and ranking if the mistake had not been spotted.

"I would advise managers and athletes to set their own times so that they are able to have something tangible to base their complaints on," De Jager said.

Athletics South Africa general manager Linda Ferns said: "It was something the referees did not pick up, however, the board looked at the appeal and after checking all facts, including our computer system, the athlete was reinstated."
