Our kids have too many rights for their own good

Faced with the mounting challenge of violent crime and general societal decay, it is worth looking at reversing some of the fundamental gains that came with our hard-fought independence.

Faced with the mounting challenge of violent crime and general societal decay, it is worth looking at reversing some of the fundamental gains that came with our hard-fought independence.

One of the areas that need to be revisited is children's rights. There are too many rights that have done massive harm to our children.

As a nation extraordinarily obsessed with the idea of being "trail-blazers, a winning nation at all costs", I think we should also be the first in the world to legislate the abolition of rights of citizens under voting age.

Parents and legal guardians should be given absolute rights to nurture and educate their children without interference from the state and pressure groups.

Evidence accumulated since 1994 shows the general decay brought about by the unlimited rights bestowed on South African kids.

Children are enjoying unfettered rights of access to pornography and the consequences are well documented in the high rates of sexual infections, including HIV-Aids.

Children carry weapons and drugs to school without fear of being searched and arrested as the law protects them from "illegal search and seizure".

By law, parents are prohibited from disciplining their own kids, fearing arrest. We have to seriously reconsider the rights of a child.

The law is good when it is observed in spirit and letter.
