Villagers yesterday came out in force to attend the court case of four men arrested in connection with the murder of an ANC councilor in Maruleng outside Tzaneen in Limpopo.

The four made a brief appearance in the Naphuno magistrates' court in Lenyenye.

Rex Rahlano, 42, Mandla Koka, 42, Steven Langa, 37, and David Sekgobela, 41, allegedly killed Thabo Patrick Namane at his home in Turkey village in the Sekororo area on October 1.

Namane, who was ANC branch secretary in the Maruleng area and the municipality's ward committee member, was shot three times in the face and chest at close range.

He died instantly.

His assailants shot Namane's wife in the back before fleeing.

She has since recovered.

Langa, a police inspector attached to the Johannesburg central police station, and Koka were arrested on Tuesday last week in Kagiso, Krugersdorp at their respective homes.

Sekgobela was arrested on Friday at the school where he taught in the Sekororo area in Limpopo.

Rahlano was arrested at a farm near Hoedspruit on October 7, the day Namane was buried.

Sekgobela is chairman of the South African National Civics Organisation and is thought to have had ambitions of becoming councillor in the March 1 local- government elections.

He was, however, outvoted by Namane.

The case was postponed to November 16 .
