Mpumalanga safety and security MEC Dina Pule has called on firearm owners not to expose children to deadly weapons.
Pule said this yesterday after a tragic incident at the weekend when a 12-year-old son of a local mayor accidentally shot and killed his mother's bodyguard.
Goodman Mlotshwa, 28, the bodyguard of Khosi Mkhonto, the mayor of Ehlanzeni district municipality, was allegedly demonstrating the use of a firearm to the child at the mayor's home in KaNyamazane, Nelspruit, on Saturday.
Police said the guard had cocked the loaded weapon and removed the magazine before giving the firearm to the child without realising that there was a bullet in the chamber.
The child aimed the firearm at the guard's head and fired.
The injured Mlotshwa was rushed to Rob Ferreira Hospital, where he later died.
"My office calls on all firearm owners to exercise responsible firearm ownership in line with the Firearm's Control Act. Under no circumstances should children be exposed to firearms," said Pule.
