An Mpumalanga man, who allegedly assaulted a medical doctor's 11-year-old son because he suspected the boy was having a sexual relationship with his daughter of the same age, is in the dock.

The man briefly appeared before the Standerton magistrates' court on Monday, charged with assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm .

He was not asked to plead and was warned to return to the same court at a later date next month.

The investigating officer, Inspector Dicksy Chiloane, confirmed that the man was charged with the assault of Hlupheka Mkhari's son in Standerton on Saturday afternoon.

"The suspect allegedly found the boy playing with his daughter and tried to discipline both. The man suspected the two were having a love relationship while they were still children," he said.

Mkhari told Sowetan that he received a call from his son, Vukheta, who stays with his mother in Standerton.

He said his son was crying bitterly, saying a neighbour had assaulted him severely.

The boy said he was playing with the girl at a local park when the girl's father arrived and chased after him.

"My son told me that the man caught up with him and took him to his home.

"The the man locked my son in his bedroom and further assaulted him with a belt as well as his hands," said Mkhari.

Mkhari said his son told him that the man's wife entered the bedroom while her husband was assaulting him and pulled the man away, pleading with him to stop the beating.

The boy managed to escape and told his mother, who called Mkhari in Johannesburg.

Chiloane said police were investigating the matter.
