Junior doctors at state hospitals claim they are being exploited by the department of health which, they say, forces them to work excessive overtime without payment.

Duan Lemmer, chairman of the Junior Doctors' Association of South Africa, said that interns, junior doctors and medical officers were expected to work more than the 80 hours of overtime a month stipulated in their employment contracts.

"We are calling on junior doctors to report any breach of contract to the medical manager of the institution," said Lemmer yesterday.
