They say the law will leave both animals and humans unemployed.
Protesters marched through downtown Mexico City Tuesday behind floats featuring plastic statues of elephants, lions and horses to show what a circus without animals would look like.
Mexico City joined several other Mexican states and cities in banning animals, and imposing fines of $45,000 to $60,000.
The law does not apply to shows with dolphins or bullfighting, nor does it prohibit the use of animals in Mexico's traditional rodeos.
Circuses will be given one year to change their acts.
