Angola bans Islam, shuts down mosques

Confirmed reports state that Angola is on a mission to ban Islam and Muslims, taking first measures by shutting down mosques in the country.

The largely Christian country who had embraced many people of faith such as Catholics, Protestants, Baptists has now denounced Islam which is a religion associated with less than 1 percent of the population, stating that Islam is not a religion but an illegal sect.

President Jose Edurado dos Santos was quoted in the Osun Defence daily saying: ‘This is the final end of Islamic influence in our country.’

The Angolan Minister of Culture Rosa Cruz e Silva announced in mid November that "all mosques would be closed until further notice" and that the "the process of legalisation of Islam has not been approved by the Ministry of Justice and Human rights" in the Weekly French-language Moroccan newspaper lanouvelletribune.info.

There are also unconfirmed reports that mosques across the African country are being destroyed, according to the International Business Times.

In 2011, the Islamic Community of Angola said that there were more than 80 mosques serving about 500,000 Muslims in Angola with a growing number every year, according to Wikipedia.
