TV stations told to turn down the ad noise

By About.com, Arstechnica.com, CNN | 2012-12-14 08:38:12.0 | COMMENTS [ 20 ]

America has a new law requiring TV broadcasters to back down on the volume of those pesky commercials that suddenly blast your eardrums.

.

The CALM (Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation) Act requires broadcasters to install technology ensuring that commercials air at a volume no louder than the programmes in which they appear.

CNN reports that the CALM Act, which originally passed at the end of 2010, finally goes into effect today.

The law also grants the FCC the authority to regulate the volume of commercials, so the new law will be enforced.

JUST FOR FUN, HERE'S A TV-RELATED CARTOON:

If women watched cooking shows like men watched sport....!

I agree with this law. I think it must also be implemented here in SA. Have you noticed how you almost always lower the volume during ad breaks.

The reason why they pay a hefty fee to flight the ads. Otherwise the TV Stations will lose revenue big time.

Nastradamas - Indeed, its 2012, going 2013.

Instead of getting DSTV, get yourself an ADSL line and an uncapped internet connection. Then get yourself a netflix account, and stream all the movies and TV shows you could watch.

Or go to eztv.it and download all the TV shows yourself.

NO ADS.

SABC 2 must also stop sqeezing video during morning live. There is nothing wrong with showing full screen video.

Sinudeity- I would be ashamed to admit that on national blogging!! no TV in 6 years?? Have you shaved in the last 6 years?? I just picture you (not a pretty sight), sitting in front of your computer screen, in your socks, boots and underpants, devouring a 6 year old pizza (lol), as you can see not a pretty thought/sight. Come on bruv, tidy up your act and get a new flat screen (we have touch-screens now in the UK). Oh, and shave!!! (have a good weekend!!!) (lol)

skwamasamabele - Hehehe. Not quite :P

You see, I have 3 flat screen TV's running off my PC, or "media centre". 2 LCD monitors for working, and one big@ss LCD screen for streaming movies and TV shows in the lounge.

TV's are obsolete, you are in fact living in the stone age. Do you go to the video store when you want to watch a movie? :P Even HD DSTV's quality is bad, compared to digital HD.

I simply browse with a remote to netflix, pick a movie, and stream at at a cost of R100 a month.

No adds, no TV license.

Well, they must stop buying cheap TV's.... My TV auto adjusts the volume according the what i set, just like my car, if i play track 1 and i set the volume 25 only to find out tracks 2 is louder than track 1 lets say 30 it will auto adjust to suit what i wanted initially this way i dont blow my speakers out.

Invest in quality and you will go a long way with your money !!
