Woman loses thousands in George Clooney scam
A Taiwan woman who thought she was dating actor George Clooney online ended up losing 1.4 million Taiwan dollars (48,000 US dollars, about R400,000) in a suspected Nigerian scam.
Yang Nien-tzu, 29, told police she met a foreigner in an online chat room in March who said he was Clooney and the two struck up a relationship.
She said the man sounded exactly like the Hollywood star when they spoke over the phone and he even apologized for worrying her after being arrested in front of the Sudan embassy in Washington.
The real Clooney was arrested in March for civil disobedience during a demonstration outside the embassy.
The scam came to light when "Clooney" asked her to transfer money to him in Nigeria, where he said he was doing UN charity work.
Police began investigating Yang in April after she tried to redeem fake traveller's cheques worth 10,000 US dollars at a local bank.
She said the cheques were compensation from her superstar boyfriend. Police cleared her of all charges Thursday after discovering that she had been cheated.
