Child killed in alleged exorcism ritual in Malaysia

A 3-year-old girl was killed in an alleged exorcism ritual performed by her parents and relatives in a northern Malaysian town, a police report said.

It said police officers arrested seven people allegedly involved in the ritual at the parent's house in Bukit Mertajam town in Penang state, 280 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur.

The suspects allegedly pinned the victim down with their bodies to ward off evil spirits. Police said the child was believed to have died from suffocation.

The parents, a grandmother, an uncle, two cousins of the victim and an Indonesian maid were arrested. Investigators were treating the case as murder.
