'Zimbabwe can't pay soldiers'

Jun 14, 2012 | Sapa-AP | 13 comments

The Zimbabwe prime minister’s party says it can’t pay the military until revenues from the nation’s eastern diamond fields, largely sealed off by troops, reach state coffers.

President Robert Mugabe from ZANU-PF and Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai from the MDC

Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai’s party said Wednesday the finance ministry it controls in the coalition government isn’t receiving money promised from diamond sales.

It said the national treasury “is yet to receive a cent” from the biggest mining company that is staffed by former military and security officials.

The defence ministry has said it needs cash for soldiers who are going hungry and to fund a recruitment drive for an additional 5,000 men.

The Movement for Democratic Change party said defence officials loyal to President Robert Mugabe have threatened violence against the finance minister if he doesn’t pay up.

Mbongo

Lies and lies. Zimbabwe is able to pay its defence force. The Western Europe and American puppet Tsvangarai is lying because is MDC is responsible for finance in Zimbabwe. It is Tendai Biti who is lying because he is the Minister of Finance and an MDC member. Viva Mugabe Viva.

@Mbongo

Don't lie Mfwethu, the writing is clear on the wall. Soldiers are hungry and Zimbabwe has no money and Chinnese have milked out whatever valuable ressources that were there in Zimbabwe.

@Cornelius
I agree with you, if this Nationalisation shiiit takes place in SA, it will take us less than 8 years to crrumble the economy to its kneees.

Zimbabweans stop pointing fingers at each other because you lot are responsible for what is happening, you voted Mugabe instead of fighting him you allowed him to do what he is doing and you developed a bad habit of relying on other people instead of building YOUR OWN country but instead you are all over the world running away from one man. You threw away baskets as if you were capable, it is still time you can throw him away together with those soldiers and form a government, invite and ask for help from west and build your country, FOR HOW LONG WILL THE SITUATION be like that? It is better to be the puppet of the west especially when you have nothing, not all people in zimbabwe are able to run away like you, when we think lets think for all. There are countries in Africa who are having nothing but West is gradually going in to help and people are being helped and fed. Zimbabwe wants to rely on other people's pockets and steal.
