Friends defied a circling shark to gather the body of a fellow spear-fisherman who had drowned in Brisbane's Moreton Bay, news reports said.
They held their breath and dived down about 25 metres to recover the body during a fishing trip Monday.
"They had seen the shark yet they still decided they were going to go down," rescue helicopter crewman Dan King told national broadcaster ABC. "As far as I am concerned it's an amazing effort."
King said it was unclear whether the shark was after the diver or the fish he had speared.
The doctor and paramedic in the helicopter tried unsuccessfully to revive the man, whose name and age were not yet to be released.
