$452 million to clean polluted Rio Bay

Rio de Janeiro's Guanabara Bay, slated to host sailing events during the 2016 Olympic Games, is going to get $452 million boost to clean the pollution that has long plagued it.

A press release from the office of state governor Sergio Cabral says he will sign an agreement on Tuesday accepting a $452 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank. According to the release, the money will help connect more than 350,000 homes to a sewage treatment plant.

Currently, about 33 percent of Rio's sewage is treated. The region around the bay is home to about 10 million people, and most of their sewage empties it its waters.

The release says the loan will help government's plan to extend sewage treatment to 80 percent of state residents before 2016.
