There's a festival called Nag Panchami that happens in India each year, where locals worship and celebrate the existence of snakes.
During the festival, which will take place on July 24 this year, the snake is bathed in milk whilst the snake charmer plays music. Prayers are conducted where people ask for protection from a snake bite. Shiva, the god depicted with a snake around his neck, is also worshipped.
From birth, children are constantly surrounded by snakes.

If there's any cruelty, it may be to the snake - not the baby. The snake has been de-fanged so that it has no venom [and as many tourists attest to, in India snakes are treated like play-things as well as money-making tools. They get slapped around if they try to rest].
