No tall order for short men

SEOUL - South Korea's human rights watchdog has instructed two matchmaking agencies to stop height discrimination when they sign up males as members.

The National Human Rights Commission ruled in favour of a 39-year-old man who had filed complaints against the agencies.

The agencies had rejected the man as a member due to his "short" height of 158 centimetres.

"The commission finds it an unreasonable act of discrimination for matchmaking agencies to reject male applicants because of their short height and it urges their corrective action," the human rights watchdog said.

The two agencies had refused membership to men who are shorter than 165 centimetres on the grounds that brides prefer men who are taller.
