Rise in sexual assaults a cause for concern

Four teenagers, a seven-year-old and a toddler were denied a joyful festive season when they were raped at the weekend - and that's just in one province

LIMPOPO police had their hands full over the last week of 2012 with a spate of child rapes, murder and attempted murders.

Four teenagers, a seven-year-old and a toddler were denied a joyful festive season when they were raped at the weekend.

Police have expressed concerns about the spate of rapes .

They claim the incidents happened as a result of youths indulging in alcohol.

Police spokesman Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi said yesterday seven men took turns raping a 16-year-old girl in the mountains of Mamone village near Jane Furse.

He said the girl was returning home from a soccer tournament at about 6pm on Saturday when the men, aged between 19 and 24, pointed a firearm at her and dragged her into the local mountains where they allegedly raped.

The men, according to Mulaudzi, left the victim on top of the mountain at about 5am the following morning.

The girl woke up and asked for help from a fellow villager who alerted the police.

"The victim told us the 'rapists' were drunk when they committed the crime and they were known to her," Mulaudzi said.

He said they had since made five arrests and that the first three were nabbed at a wedding.

The other two, he said, were arrested in the village and that the parents of the sixth one had arranged with police to bring their son to the local police station.

"The seventh suspect, who is the kingpin, who was also in possession of the firearm, is still on the run. We also want to advise members of the public not to confront him, but notify the police whenever they see him because he is dangerous."

The arrested men will appear in the Sekhukhune Magistrate's Court today.

Mulaudzi said another 16-year-old girl was gang-raped by three men in Maake near Tzaneen on Sunday.

He said the girl was abducted from a tavern and raped. No arrests had been made.

The police also arrested a 22-year-old SA National Defence Force member in Malale village on Monday after he was accused of continuously raping a 14-year-old girl in Tshamutumbu.

"It is alleged the suspect, who is based at Madimbo, had been molesting the victim for months. Her ordeal came to the attention of the victim's mother, who reported the matter," Mulaudzi.

He is due to appear in the local magistrate's court today.

In Letsitele, a mother caught a neighbour allegedly raping her three-year-old at a nearby river on Sunday.

In Maake, a father allegedly raped his seven-year-old daughter.

Both men were arrested.

A 13-year-old girl from Vila Nora was allegedly kidnapped and repeatedly raped for two days.
