Lotto gives money for Mandela centre
Centre will be opened to the public in mid-2013
The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Johannesburg has received a R11.8 million grant for its refurbishment from the National Lottery Distribution Trust Fund.
National Lottery board chairman Alfred Nevhutanda said it was a contribution to maintain the Mandela legacy, as the world celebrated July as Mandela Month.
“The legacy left to us by Tata Mandela is most significant. We are proud that the ordinary people of South Africa, through participation in the National Lottery, are going to contribute to maintaining this rich legacy.”
Nevhutanda said one of the fund’s aims was to support projects which would leave a legacy.
The centre’s premises in Houghton, Johannesburg, were first used by Mandela for his post-presidential work. After his retirement in 2004 it was turned into an archival and dialogue centre.
The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory, which would feature a permanent exhibition, would be opened to the public in mid-2013.
The centre’s CEO Achmat Dangor said: “This grant will assist us in fulfilling Madiba’s mandate to make the record of his life and times available to the world, especially young to people”.

Bless his cotton socks but doesn't the Nelson Mandela trust have more than enough money? Surely cutting funds to homes for the disabled and special needs schools should be a bit higher on the priority list than an organisation worth millions?Report Abuse

@MommaC Are you saying Lotto.. should prioritise cutting funds for homes of the diables and schools for special needs children? I hope you did not mean that. They should be NUMBER 1 and always be there. However, Lotto is selective in its distribution of funds. How can you give Nelson Mandela Trust money and neglect the poor and destitute kids?? This is done the South African way. I am not surprised. Go help them in their endeavours to help rich funds and benefit on the side.

why do I get the feeling only the Mandela charities get lotto funding without a hitch.is it the only charity in Mzansi?
I am yet to see a successful business man/woman who can testify that they were once an ophan at Mandelas' charity. Methinks its one big sham and the old man doesn't even know it.

MAGICMANNo. Read it again. I'm saying that the disabled and special needs schools should be far ABOVE a rich organisation on the list.
