Family grieves for Mandela's sister

FORMER president Nelson Mandela returned to Johannesburg yesterday after spending months at his rural home in Qunu, Eastern Cape. Unfortunately Mandela’s arrival in Johannesburg was followed by reports about the death of his 81-year-old sister Nokuthamba.

Nelson Mandela Foundation spokesman Sello Hatang confirmed that Mandela’s younger sister and only surviving sibling had died on Saturday night.

However, Hatang could not confirm any details concerning funeral arrangements.

“It is with great sadness that the Mandelas learned last night of [her] death,” said Mandela’s grandson Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela in a statement.

Mandela’s grandson said she would be sorely missed by the entire family.

Mandela went to Qunu last year after a short spell at the Milpark Hospital in Parktown, Johannesburg, for what was described as “routine medical tests”.

His admission into hospital led to speculations about his health.

More than a year ago the 93-year-old statesman had been hospitalised for an acute respiratory infection.

Yesterday presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj appealed to both the public and the media to respect the privacy of Mandela and his family.

“The former president continues to be in good health. We once more appeal for his privacy and that of his family to be respected.

“If there are any developments, we’ll make an announcement,” he said.

On Saturday, Maharaj was quoted saying Mandela had to return to Johannesburg because “maintenance has to be undertaken at his Qunu home in the Eastern Cape”.

Security was tight around Mandela’s Houghton home yesterday. Police blocked 13th and 14th streets leading to his house. Motorists were asked to use alternative routes, with a few of them complaining about the inconvenience.
