Plans by the government to further restrict smoking in public places has some business owners crying foul and threatening legal action.
"This regulation must be rejected because it is not possible to implement... ," said Township Liquor Traders Association secretary Patric Poggenpoel.
He said his organisation had not been consulted on the rule making and asked the department of health to reconsider it.
He said if the new rule went ahead some business owners and organisations would likely challenge it in court.
The new rules would prohibit people from smoking in any public place, including restaurants bars and shebeens.
It also prevents them from smoking within 10 metres of a window to a public place.

You are right brother, It has long been common knowledge that smoking is a health risk. What I fail to understand is why the law is only becoming active in South Africa only after UK has passed the same law. Can't our governments tell right from wrong without having to refer to the UK. What do you think will happen when the UK and the US decide to legalize marijuana?! We have no government here but only CEO's managing the country. One day the west will switch from democracy and claim it is no longer relevant, and I guess our leaders will wait for a new political curriculum?!

Why is Government so vicious about smoking? Yes smoking is a health risk, but so is drinking, eating junk food, riding in an unsafe taxi etc. Smokers know the risks and as long as their smoking do not affect others, whats the big deal. If only all the energy spent on smoking issues can be used to fight crime and corruption...Report Abuse

They can't monitor and enforce current laws so this isn't worth the paper it is written on anyhow.Strange how the DoH is all eager to be a nanny state but can't be bothered to get basic health care right
