Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane yesterday insisted that the appointment does not mean that the department has been placed under administration.

She said the department has had problems with paying suppliers and a shortage of staff.

Mokonyane, MEC for health Hope Papo and finance MEC Mandla Nkomfe held a press briefing to announce a radical turnaround plan to improve health services in the province. The plan's focus will be on logistics, hospital management, human resources, financial management and communications.

"A key focus area is on electro-mechanical equipment including lifts, generators and chillers. We have made considerable progress in this regard since last year, including the replacement of 31 lifts, seven boilers, 10 standby generators and 30 chillers. New laundry equipment was supplied for the Dunswart laundry and Masakhane laundry at the end of November," Mokonyane said.

Supply chain management staff will be vetted and a health economist has been appointed to ensure value for money. Mokonyane did not say how much this would cost, but the plan will run until 2014.

Another department which failed poor people. It is very sad indeed, to see that incompetence and cluelessness is still order of the day in ANC goverment. We really needs a renewed ANC after Mangaung to vexed out the all the paralysis that are eschewing the very fibre of service delivery.

But surely the MEC for Health must be fired ? Why must we taxpayers pay her a massive salary if she cannot do the job ? Does the ANC not understand the concept that if a person cannot do a job he/she must not be in that position ?

But surely that is taking a simplistic view on situation which is more involved than that. How will firing the MEC resolve the staff shortage crisis?

Leevy

At the beginning of the year the country was promised that "vacancies would be filled, blah, blah, blah." It is not acceptable to appoint an administrator (at an astronomical cost not budgeted for), and not make appointments of people who can be held accountable.
