Anglo miner killed

ONLY a day after Frans Baleni warned of more violence in the mine strikes, a mine worker was reportedly killed at Amandelbult yesterday.

Baleni, the general secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers, warned about the imminent violence that would accompany the strikes.

Details were sketchy about the death, but Limpopo police spokeswoman colonel Ronel Otto confirmed the incident.

“Apparently there was an incident where a person was killed. It was a male, aged between 30 and 40 and so far, no one has yet been arrested,” Otto said, adding that she was still trying to get more information.

The miner was allegedly killed at the mine’s Mlanje sports grounds. It is where four other mine employees were recently allegedly assaulted and forced to strip naked in front of their colleagues.

Mpumi Sithole, spokeswoman for Anglo American, also did not have all the details. “I have also heard those reports as well and I’m still trying to establish them,” Sithole said.

She has previously condemned the intimidation of non-striking workers by those taking part in the illegal strike.

“We are disappointed that the striking employees showed little care and respect for their fellow employees and subjected them to such action. We appeal to our employees who are part of the illegal strike action to respect the dignity and human rights of their fellow colleagues,” Sithole said.

The latest incident follows that of the vicious assault of four Waterval smelter shaft employees on Friday.

According to the police, three of the employees were in a critical condition and the fourth was in the intensive care unit.

National Union of Mineworkers' branch secretary in Rustenburg Titus Diale has previously blamed the company for the fatalities at the mines, saying their refusal to halt operations while the pay strike was still taking placed a number of employees in harm's way.
