Pay dispute is costing huge money
A strike by more than 20,000 truck drivers in South Africa is costing the freight industry 1,2 billion rand ($141 million) in lost revenue each week, an industry body said on Friday.
“Estimates indicate that employees in this industry are losing in the region of 270 million rand in wages per week during the strike, with around 1,2 billion rand in turnover being lost on the part of industry per week,” the Road Freight Employers Association said in a statement.
Talks between unions and employers collapsed on Thursday after the workers rejected the latest pay rise offer. The strike has been on for two weeks.

The difference between African people and the First World, is that they are like sheep - they blindly "follow the leader" without deciding what's wrong or right for themselves - just like Zimababwe - they are like sheep. These strikes crippled the rest of Africa - now watch this space .......... The Africans are not very proud because the choose to look like fools - and they look like fools to the rest of the world - unable to solve their problems and still live in the dark ages where they think you solve problems with violence.....we are a joke.

What a fine mess. I understand people need a salary to live on, but dont we all. So what happens - company gives them their huge increase and then has to retrench workers for financial reasons. So who wins? . I agree with Ndele01. Scare our investors away with our non ability to solve issues without violence and what then strikers? Yes, we look like an unstable country. Dont strikers see beyond their own needs and see what is doing to the REST OF THE COUNTRY.Report Abuse

GOVERNMENT SHOULD PASS A LAW THAT ALL STRIKES ARE ILLEGAL. EVERYBODY SHOULD RECEIVE PAY RISES EQUIVALENT TO THE LAST YEAR'S INFLATION RATE PLUS 2% . PROPER JOB EVALUATIONS SHOULD FORM THE BASIS FOR ALL SALARY EVALUATIONS,.ANY SALARY SHOULD BE BASED ON A BASKET OF REQUIREMENTS FOR EXAMPLE, PHYSICAL ,MENTAL .MANAGEMENT SKILLS, EDUCATION , EXPERIENCE ETC . THE MANUAL LABOURER WILL OBVIOUSLY FALL IN THE LOWEST GROUP WHO SHOULD EARN A LIVING WAGE.HEALTH AND EDUCATION WORKERS FOR EXAMPLE , THE WORLD OVER , ARE POORLY PAID. SORRY TO SAY SO BUT AS A RESULT OF THE NEW POLITICAL DISPENSATION IN SOUTH AFRICA A LOT OF PEOPLE HAVE LANDED IN JOBS WHERE THEY DO NOT BELONG AND THEY ALSO LACK WORK ETHIC.
