Although I do not condone strike action as a whole and violence even less, I am pleased that this investigation is revealing the gross neglect of the most basic human needs by the highly exploitative mining industry. Sure, one can argue that those living in the "informal settlement" are doing so of their own accord and are thus not the responsibility of the mine, but when one sees the conditions in the "dormitories" I must say I wouldn't choose to stay there. An ethical dilemma with no right or wrong answer here. From one view how can humans allow other humans to live in such conditions. You should take care of all stakeholders and make sure all are happy, but again if they do get a subsidy like some say then the organization did its part and it is then up to the labourer to uplift or maintain the hostels or move on to its own premises. South Africans are a funny breed. These issues are well known and documented. C'mon! does it take a multimillion rand commission for these issues to be in the South African media? The British, American and Australian public already knew this but was shocked that it didn't make news in the SA media immediately after the massacre day. In fact the SA media should have exposed these conditions BEFORE the massacre since they've been there since day in memorial.
The SA media is only fixated in exposing dirt of government and politicians - nothing wrong with that. But how about intensely exposing the state of living conditions of farm workers and mine workers, to list a few? How about making everyday, headlines about the poor living conditions of the majority of rural and shack dwellers? Expose the loopsided nature of our country's socio-economic conditions - perhaps the captains of capital, government, politicians and the public can be pressured to make changes for the BETTERMENT OF ALL SOUTH AFRICANS.
As it has been warned, leaving the status quo is not beneficial for any South African including the same investors since the status is rife for other Marikanas, only larger in scale. Report Abuse

From what I can tell (and this is third hand so not too reliable), the accommodation outside of the hostels is at a premium. A one room dwelling at a private place can set them back R3,000 easily - then you have transport added. A lot of the miners take their R1,800 (?) allowance and send it home so they live in shacks in the squatter camp but they are constantly in danger of being robbed. The ones who stay in the hostels at least have water and electricity (along with very cheap, subsided meals) so they put up with the conditions. Report Abuse

Daniel: I think you must concede that those structures (and the system that constructed them) were/are shocking. Little better than cattle pens. This has long been common knowledge, even without the footage and info available now. Mine companies have "traditionally" paid little heed to the living conditions of their workers, and to try and deny that is just disingenuous. If the R1800 is their monthly housing allowance then they could find decent accommodation for that price especially if the grouped together to hire a flat or house, so why do they live in these disgusting conditions then??
I maintain that management should pay them a salary with medical, pension and UIF, it will then be up to them as adults to arrange their own accommodation transport etc just like the rest of us.
These are largely migrant labour. The locals were unhappy about having to pay for their own accommodation, that is why the housing allowance came to be. Although I do not condone strike action as a whole and violence even less, I am pleased that this investigation is revealing the gross neglect of the most basic human needs by the highly exploitative mining industry. Sure, one can argue that those living in the "informal settlement" are doing so of their own accord and are thus not the responsibility of the mine, but when one sees the conditions in the "dormitories" I must say I wouldn't choose to stay there.Report Abuse

It seems that many facts are left out so no one answer will be correct or wrong?
MommaC
DanielrjvvurenYes, the miners get a housing subsidy but only if they DON'T live in the hostels or in one of the houses. The mine is responsible for all maintenance and repairs (like any landlord).
According to the report on both the Times and Mail+Guardian, the new singles hostel will be one man rooms with two people sharing a toilet and a shower. I'm not sure what upgrades are going into the old hostel.

MommaCThen why if they do get subsidized would any person in their sane mind want to stay in such degradation? Something doesn't add up here. I fully agree that no human should live in such conditions but how can they themselves stay there if they could say have their own place? There are many variables to understand on top of it all like transport and all but considering face value something doesn't add up for me.

DanielrjvvurenFrom what I can tell (and this is third hand so not too reliable), the accommodation outside of the hostels is at a premium.

This has long been common knowledge, even without the footage and info available now. oldlady12A bit more diluted than half but ja, there is a bit of the old colonial blood mixed in this old mongrel :)
Been to England and the last place i'd want one foot would be that soggy little island - also not too fond of the sea so nothing is going to dangle in that.
