Yip, and of course this is absolutely inevetable as all stakeholders in this mess MUST have known. Now J Malletjie and the boys are going home to their comfy mansions to watch the watershed. Sick!

Lonmin planned to close down a shaft operated by Murray and Roberts on contract. This would lead to 1200 lost jobs. It had also cancelled plans for a new development, costing a potential 3000 jobs.

I did say after the Marikana we will be followed by job losses,in Lonmin.......hardly a day....not all will benefit the 22% increase as they will be jobless/

as we have stated on this forum that its highly unlikely the mine will be able to absord the costs...so they they go, give and increase, demand more, and fire 3000 people.

Actually it is not because of Marikana, Amplats has been contemplating this since last year, the price of platinum has been at its lowest in the last year, I think Marikana will be a good excuse to run with but it is not the cause, I do concede that it may have fast tracked the process but it is not the main reason, this has been on the cards especially within the platinum sector. If you don't believe me check when and why the Amplats CEO resigned, there pressure has been there all along.

However I agree with NUM that the continuous pressure from the remaining striking miners will only worsen the situation.

I really have mixed feelings about this, I do not blame the workers for the loss of jobs I understand fully where they come from and support the demand for a fair wages for the hard work they do but capitalism is designed to exploit and it is the only system so far to allow proper job creation and economic growth. So ja...I suppose that is why I am not an economist...

This is bad news, now mine owners are trimming the number of workers so they can be able to control them when they strike again.
