A PRECONDITION that striking workers at the Lonmin mine return to work before wage negotiations could begin has dashed all hopes of resolving the standoff.

Just fire the whole lot and you will be amazed at how many more people will come forward to apply for jobs. Alternatively close the mine for a while. They expect to be paid for no work? mxxm

Mokoduwe and Dikenkeng,all employyes who work underround get risk allowance,if you compare the work of a person working on surface doing the same job,they get some amount less.There are wise guys who works at lonmin who are looking for work on other mines around rustenburg cause of the worsening situation at lonmin.

How can they expect miners to strike for more than 4 weeks & all of the sudden go back to work without getting what they were striking for? The best thing the management can do is to put a figure on the table R8000-R10000, if the miners reject it then persuade them to go to work & assure them that they will negotiate & improve the offer.

But not push them to work without anything.

@All:

What will eventually happen, Lonmin will give R12500 BUT two months after everyone is back at work, the company will start retrenching in hundreds because it will be loosing profits.Are they going to march for the retrenchments as well???

As for killing those who want to work, law enforcement must arrest or kill them if they again if they think they are above the law.

@third eye, you are talking about putting a figure on the table. Which table because the workers do not want to come to the table. A strike has to follow a procedure. You negotiate before you strike. Employee reps negotiate with the employer. Once a deadlock is reached, then you can strike. In the case of Lonmin Mine, it has gone the other way, moreover they refuse to abide by the rules of engagment.

Fire the whole lot of them. There are plenty of others out there who are willing to work. From reports I've heard the miners earn around R5500 per month but with their other benefits it amounts to just over R11000. By continuing to strike illegally they will probably start firing some people and then of course there is the no work no pay. This also lends me to believe that the unions dont really have the miners interests at heart an neither does their so called "saviour" THE FAT ONE

I also think that is the best solution, though they will intimidate people who cumto work. Even closing the mines and putting Task Team police to protect the assets. After all they will afford to pay them if the close the mine. This then is followed by letting China buy the mine.

maybe you should look into the "Basis of going into business" then you can claim that firing 10K people is not thinking straight. This people signed a contract when they first started to work there.And there are stipulation and rules that they said they will adhere to. For the record their strike is illegal. And in business you do not make friends, you there to make money.Its a pity that they do not know that their strike was predetermined before they even ventured into it. Now that they are chess pieces, they feel the heat and are scared to succumb.

I beg to differ with you here my sister. It is not about being stupid or being insensetive or being no so happy if we get R4000 a month. Its business, maybe you should have checked those people who work there, most of them are your juniors, one question comes to mind. Given that we are into this new dispensation we call freedom / democracy, why didn't they use the available resorces that is supplied by the goverment of the day to empower themselves? Why did, and i guess 90% of them seem to be even not having a stupid grade 12? There are schools in townships/rural area that are goverment sponsorsed no fees at all, they opted to bunk schools and come to work there. Its a pity you do not know the strike was preplanned and its not about Marikana/Lonmin miners.

They must just close the mines and see if they will much.
