South African police minister Nathi Mthethwa has confirmed that more than 30 people were killed in a security crackdown on striking miners at Lonmin’s Marikana platinum mine yesterday
Asked in an interview on Talk Radio 702 whether he could confirm reports of at least 30 deaths, Mthethwa said “Yes.”
He later clarified: “I’m talking yesterday only”.

Our condolences to all those who lost their lives.Lessons learnt from this:
People must listen to the instructions of the police.
People must not go to strikes armed. They may have weapons, but they cannot match the firepower of the police.
I believe there is nothing else that police could have done in that situation.
Since we all now have cool heads, we must now use this opportunity to reconcile and move forward as a safe nation

4000 a month, that is just slavery. There can be no struggle without casualties, the mine bosses pay themselves ridiculous amounts they don't even need, why can't they pay their employees a living wage ?

yes xhosagirl....bobby was doing business the only way he knows how...by removing any obstacle on his way. that being said, I am officially resiging from my voluntary support of kaizer chiefs soccer club. I cannot and will not support a club whose leadership has blood on their hands....Now to lonmin topic, these mining companies come here to loot our resources and after 30 years or so we are left with dumps and people that are suffering from all sorts of ailments. I sympathise with the workers. LONMIN is to blame for this massacre...they also have blood on their hands..

Lonmin have 25 000 employees. Their 2011 annual employee costs (including pensions, shares and social security) was to $796m / R6.5 Billion. This equates to R253 000 per employee. Their miners were asking for a monthly salary of R12 500. Lonmins profit for the year was $321m / R2.6 Billion which was a 260% increase from 2010. Who's the real criminal? Stop the slave labor!https://www.lonmin.com/Lonmin_Annual_Report_2011/Root/notes/note_05.html
