Mines must involve workers on safety
MINING companies should involve workers on the ground in order to make mines safe, said Johann Lewis, Xstrata group safety manager
"If we want to be successful we have to involve our people. We can't tell them what to do. We've got to involve them.
"They are the guys who are executing the tasks daily. They know what the risks are, better than we think they do," he said.
According to the Chamber of Mines SA, as at yesterday, this year 69 people had died in South African mines - just 3% less than in the same period last year.
In 2011, a total of 123 people died in mines across the country.
Lewis said: "Once we involve the workers, we've got to empower them ... We have to be careful that we create an environment where people can stand up and say 'if it is unsafe here I'll stop this job'."
Lewis was speaking on the sidelines of the Mine Safety 2012 Conference hosted by the SA Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in Ekurhuleni.

While i agree to your statement Mr Lewis, im sure you and i know that the unsafety conditions are due to the production pressures. If we want to mine safely and productively we must reduce production calls to reasonable measures. Bonus systems also contribute to this. Our employees were involved since day one on safety issues and measures but they get pressure from the management. We will not excercise section 23 of the MHSA while our management still threatens us!

Agree with you DjEp, safety is compromised by the demand for production, and the carrot dangled in front of management and employees is production bonus so there needs to be a balance in incentivisng production and maintaining safety. The other issue is that there is a lack of accountability on the side of the miners and shift supervisors who instruct people to work in unsafe areas and when things go wrong they deny having given such instructions and the employees are forced to comply with these ulawful instructions because they fear losing their jobs, and when they are injured they still shoulder the blame because they did something they knew is unlawful. So there needs to a serious change in mindset and culture on all sides.Report Abuse
