It's only phuthu and beans, it's not pork which they say is haraam. Maybe I could understand if it was pork. So does it mean that African food is haraam to these people? That's why when one muslim guy once brought me some food I chucked it into the rubbish bin. He won't accept to eat my food but expects me to eat his.

Sowetan, please can you provide a list of entities owned by both Colefax Trading (Pty) Ltd and Yum Restaurants so I can boycott their entities. From today I am entering a KFC store until they drop the charges and APOLOGISE to the employee in question, I have no interest in supporting establishments that do not respect my culture. Had KFC supplied food to the people who cook and serve their meals perhaps they would have a case but these workers cannot even afford meals they prepare yet they are still bullied in their work place.

Since when is Ismamic religion / culture important than sound labour practices?

Gents let's not make excuses, this boils down to cultural bullying over the very people they make from from. Other examples are franchisees who serve Halaal exclusively even though their customer base is not Islam i.e. being served Macon instead of Bacon or shops closed on Friday afternoons when they could just as easily get someone to run their shops during times of Islamic worship.

Is our culture subservient to Indian religion / culture, I think not especially where we are the customer yet we are never right or considered when these decisions are made.

My girlfriend is a functions co-ordinator at a well known conference venue in Gauteng. Halaal meals must be ordered separately and then be kept separately from any other food for the few Halaal eaters in every group. They are not even permitted to touch the plates if they worked with other food. Then afterwards the non-matching plates it came in is not accepted back by the supplier (who is also a halaal eater), so you sit with a person whos meal is more expensive to provide and you are stuck with plates you paid for, but cant use again. No disrespect intended, but arent they just a little bit too full of sh!t?

That is what happens when minorities enjoy equal rights to the majority in a land. This is soo stupid, since when is pap and beans not halaal?I think people here shouldn't confuse Indian culture clothed as Islam, with Islam.Just because they don't eat pap and beans in the Indian culture, it doesn't make it not halaal.This is rubbish.I'm a staunch muslim and African and I eat pap and beans often.This has nothing to do with Islam people, it Indian culture.Halaal means lawful or permissible.For food, especially meat which requires slaughter, it simply means that animal has to be prayed for before slaughter and the slaughtering must be swift and not make the animal suffer unnecessary pain.That's all.These people have made things very complicated and missed the point of this law.Things like vegies can never be haraam as its from the ground and healthy.Food is made haraam if it harms your body or spirituality ( if its not prayed for) when consuming it.Also this law for food is not absolute, there are circumstances where you can eat haraam food.The point here is that food must nourish you, not be harmful to your body.But this is not soo important that you can fire somebody for it.Its nonsense.Jesus said its not what goes into the mouth that defile man, but that which comes out of it, because its from his heart.Eating halaal food is a part of a general whole, its not everything.The most important thing is good conduct, which is a result of a good heart.You can eat all the halaal food you like but its won't help if your heart is rotten.You need to start fixing your heart, this is important, not what these people are doing.They are messing up everything and distorting important things to suit their particular culture.Islam is not unreasonable, there has to be an appropriate response to a fitting situation.

The last time i checked, RSA was a Christian nation who knows how to respect other religions. Having said that, KFC needed to have been providing food for the staff memebrs if they did not want anyone to bring food.
I do not understand a religion the fusses so much on how food is killed/cooked and what type of food it is and yet they never fuss about the suicide bombers that have killed thousands of people over the years.

Guys in 2009 there was a similar case where an employee at a KFC outlet in the same province was dismissed for wearing isiphandla to work and refused to remove it. Hygiene concerns perhaps but surely one should be allowed cover up isiphandla much like one covers their hair when preparing food.

It boils down to a trend where employees are treated like second-class citizens in the country of their birth post-apartheid.

The cleaner was already on a final warning, then I can presume that there were other issues at hand, maybe discipline - we don't know, sowetan must elaborate. The company has a policy and if any employee does not follow company policy, then there will be consequences. However it is shameful that certain individuals can use Islam to abuse other people.I suspect this could be a deliberate attempt by the reporter to tarnish islam during the month of ramadaan, please present the actual facts. Besides, it is unlikely that KFC food is halaal, the manner that the chickens are sacrificed is questionable, thus this food must be totally avoided, especially by muslims.

KFC can never be halaal, its very unhealthy.Pap and beans are far better than KFC health wise.Also these chicken used by KFC are grown over-night on the farms using in a very short-cut way, that chicken is not even fully developed.Its very unhealthy.Also how they get slaughter, its very cruel.It can never be halaal but we dealing with scrupulous people here.Its all about money rather than the wellbeing of people.It makes far more business sense to grow chickens over night and chop chop then quickly than wait for the chicken to naturally grow.Its all about money.

I totally understand concerns around hygiene, my contention is there are options regarding mitigating and even eliminating the risk posed. It would be ill-advised to insist on our culture just as it is ill-advised to dismiss someone without finding a compromise that works for everyone. Disinfect it on a daily basis if push comes to shove but dismissing someone on that basis is lunacy and indicative of an attitude that says this is my company and you will not tell how to run my company or who to hire which unfortunately seems to be the prevailing attitude.

I agree with government's position that food from occupied territories should be labelled as such to allow consumers to make an informed decision and certainly not support entities who endorse the continued subjugation of an entire nation. We had a Muslim woman who wore a motorcycle helmet in the mill as the scarf was a danger to herself and others. A rather strange compromise but it beats having your head ripped off when the scarf gets caught in the rollers.

Sterilizing a piece of untanned animal skin would be incredibly difficult and probably anger the wearer.

SA is not a Moslem country. When in Rome do what the Romans do. It seems in SA we are happy to be run roughshod over our contitution to please the terrorists, err, sorry moslems. Somehow I dont think we can do as we please in Iran, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, etc, yet they are allowed to do as they please in our country

Hi all. I am muslim. Obviously the character who owns or runs the outlet is getting ahead of himself. I don't see a problem if the policy is to prevent cross contamination of the shop food. However to put an outright ban on the allowance of food for employee consumption should be balanced by them with providing a suitable area to consume it. I shall write a personal letter to the management to advise them on being more reasonable and rational with their store policy.

Finally, any reference to Islam in this article should not be construed as if it is an Islamic policy that was implemented. It was actually a(n) (immoral) personal decision by the owners and was done with no real consideration of the actual Islamic teaching regarding employee rights.
