“The health unit has finally identified and confirmed the source of the cat urine-like odour which has plagued residents (intermittently), in the South Durban area,” eThekwini municipal spokesman Thabo Mofokeng said on Tuesday.  

Mofokeng said the company Fuel Firing System (FFS) Refiners (Pty) Ltd in the Clairwood area would face legal action.

He said the “waste streams” which caused the odour on Saturday morning had been isolated.

Mofokeng did not elaborate on the nature of the substance in the waste streams, but said further testing was being done.

The company had co-operated with health officials, he said.

Mofokeng said the source of cat urine-like odours floating across the southern suburbs had previously not been identified.

Saving money on hazardous waste disposals. Fine them 3 times the money they saved. Here in Midrand I had the same problem - at around 1 o clock each day there was a strong solvent like smell coming from the drains. I reported this to the Joburg city council and they sorted it out quickly.

Muhle yena! At the journo you could give this article a lot of substance by giving info on laws regarding industrial pollution, interview someone from Green Peace to get a better perspective ....
