ANC moves to allay fears over grants
THE ANC has moved swiftly to allay fears that the proposed Job Seekers' Grant - meant to subsidise those looking for work - is a replacement for the stalled youth wage subsidy.
Yesterday, ANC head of policy Jeff Radebe also dismissed suggestions that the allowance was a watered down version of the controversial wage subsidy.
Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi on Tuesday sought clarity on the form the grant would take.
Said Radebe: "The Job Seekers' Grant is not intended as a replacement for the youth wage subsidy. In fact, it is not related to that (wage subsidy) but whether it is adopted or not depends on deliberations by delegates."
Radebe would not reveal whether the grant would be similar to a social grant . Lack of clarity has led to fears that social spending could be pushed to the limit.
