CHIEF executive officers of major mining firms have cited climate change, social upliftment and carbon emissions as major challenges in their businesses.
In a panel discussion on corporate social responsibility at the Mining Indaba in Cape Town, Andre Wilkens, CEO of African Rainbow Minerals (ARM), said: "One of the main issues is carbon emissions and their potential impact.
"We are competitive in the low carbon economy and are constantly thinking about water and energy. We also educate communities on sustainability issues," he said.
Mark Cutifani, CEO of AngloGold Ashanti, said resource nationalisation was a major issue.
He said the group was cognisant of what it did on a global basis, particularly in Africa where its actions should benefit entire communities.
