Rail union backtracks on strike action

THE South African Transport and Allied Workers Union has decided not to challenge the court ruling that has declared its strike action as being illegal.

LUCKY MONTANA

Metrorail, a subsidiary of the Passenger Rail Agency Association responsible for ferrying train passengers in the urban areas, lodged an urgent interdict with the labour court in Johannesburg on Wednesday to prevent its employees from going on strike.

Satawu had announced on Tuesday that its members would be downing tools in protest against Prasa group CEO Lucky Montana, whom it is accusing of corruption and nepotism.

The trade union has issued a statement encouraging its workers to go to work as usual today, with union spokesman Rea Molopyane saying in a statement: "We respect the court ruling and we call on all our members who work for Metrorail to do the same".

Satawu has also advised train commuters to look for alternative transport to travel to work today as about 3000 Metrorail workers, who include train drivers, would not be reporting for duty.

In accepting the court ruling, Metrorail Gauteng manager Tembela Kulu said in a statement: "This court interdict will enable Metrorail to continue providing rail transport to more than 1.5 million commuters daily in Gauteng - operating 1172 train trips without any disruptions.

There is a growing cry abot this Montana guy, who proved untouchable and allegedly very corrupt. It is also true that he hired his friends and family and that he does what he likes. He is a member of the ANC and SACP. He brought his whole Mamelodi crew when he joined metrorail some years ago. He is convincing to be strongly connected, arrogant and very silly boy.

Why don't they go to his office, haul him out and refuse to let him back in until someone investigates?
Stopping ordinary people from getting to and from work isn't going to affect him. He has the waBenzi for that.

That is such a PR textbook statement - which dictates that you recite extracts from your Company's vision and mission statement (or any other generic info), when you do not want to talk about the actual business at hand.
