Firings anger union

Feb 3, 2012 | Vusi Xaba | 3 comments

THE National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has blamed Impala Platinum Holdings (Implats) for the massive firing of 17,200 employees at the company's Rustenburg, North West, plant since the beginning of an illegal strike.

NUM blamed Implats for allowing an unrecognised union to hold meetings and of negotiating in bad faith.

The strike started after the company reviewed salaries of rock drillers by increasing them by 18%, while diggers didn't get an increase.

I like Impala Platinum, they don't mince their words. We are sick and tired of these lazy assholes who in the slightest disagreement with the employers take to the streets.Impala fired thousands of employees in Springs two years ago as well.Let them hire students and qualified young people who need jobs urgently.

Firing 17200 employees, that's great, unemployed must submit their applications or CV because there are 17200 post available. There's are reason for raising 18% for those drillers, because it's a trade; to dig, even a 3mths old can dig, which means that's not a trade, it's natural...

Clearly Sabza007 and Nicholaster you have no clue on the conditions that mineworkers work under. While the rest of you live under the illusion that apartheid is over go to any mine and see that it is very much alive and kicking. Some miners earn less than R3000 a month and they work in treacherous conditions every single day they go underground their lives are at stake. White empployees get paid more than their black colleagues and you will never find whites in low positions like belt attendants for more than 3 months, whereas a black man will train whites only for them to be promoted and he stays there for 20 years. Shame on you mining houses! Shame on you! NUM get your house in order especially in the North West region how can you strike because the mine is talking to an unrecognised union? How is that a matter of mutual interest to justify 17 000 people losing their jobs?
