Tenderpreneurs cripple provinces

Jan 24, 2012 | Reader Letter | 0 comments

THE intervention by national government in various provinces is prompted in the main by the unwillingness of provincial departments to curb inflated prices charged by my so-called tenderpreneur colleagues.

Much as I would like to believe that politicking might have played a role in some of these interventions by the national government, the reality of the matter is that in the meantime the tenderpreneurs charge exorbitant prices for the goods and services they supply to the government.

In some instances the culprits are government officials who are abusing the system and acting in cahoots with tenderpreneurs to cost tenders in such a way that prices skyrocket within few months of the execution of the contract.

In terms of the Constitution, the government is required to implement a procurement system that is cost effective, so nothing stops any government department from compiling a list of prices that it deems reasonable.

The price list-guide should only be used to establish boundaries of reasonableness of prices to counter any collusion between the tenderpreneur and government officials in trying to inflate prices.

In the process taxpayers' money is saved the national government will no longer be accused of playing political games with Limpopo province.

We cannot allow such practices to go unchecked and unpunished.
