'He's the boss!'
TIGHTENING laws does not make people perform better, said Chris Mukoki, the 2011 Boss of The Year.
Mukoki, 47, is the head of secured lending credit granting at Standard Bank.
He is also a founding pastor of Progress Ministries in Kagiso, the church he has led for the past nine years.
He won the prize at a glamourous event in Sandton, sponsored by MTN SA Foundation, Stabilo, The Blue Train and Europcar.
This was the 22 second edition of the awards. "It was not about winning. It was a sense of being recognised," he said.
He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from Unisa and a Secondary Teachers' Diploma.
Mukoki began his career as a lecturer at the Soweto College of Education.
"Teaching plays a role in all spheres of life, it is just that in the corporate world you just need to teach people business principles.
"It is much more specific," he explained.
"People have to learn about profitability, performance and making an input into the organisation."
Mokoki said it was paramount for leaders to understand that more laws could not solve the country's economic challenges or improve people's performance.
"Many people in business want to try to comply instead of being proactive and seeing the need to change.
"The government is trying to change people's perceptions, but people are not moving in line with what the government is thinking.
"Laws do not inspire anybody to do anything.
"Laws actually makes people reluctant to change. People feel like this change is being enforced on them they do not feel it is necessary to change.
"What drives people to change is when change is communicated to them and it is explained why they need to change," he said.
But Mokoki conceded that when there is a lot of conflict in the workplace, this demanded new leadership qualities.
"There is no conflict without a source.
"Identify the source and then decide if it is a necessary thing or is it a problem that can be solved now or time. Then you start by addressing the small issues that arose from that conflict."
Mokoki outlined the qualities a good leader should have:
- lead by example;
- have a strategy and know exactly where the organisation is at;
- have a vision - a good leader should know how to look beyond themselves;
- avoid being be self-centred; and
- be able to take decisions.
