Men still earn bigger salaries

A STUDY by the World Bank has revealed that while women far outnumber men in universities, men still earn bigger salaries than their female counterparts.

The World Bank's 2012 report on gender equality and development which was released in Johannesburg yesterday, showed that the world was still struggling with certain gender issues. The study involved 90 countries, including South Africa, and looked at how gender equality evolves among developing countries and developed ones.

It further identified the gaps between the genders and then made recommendations on how countries could deal with the challenges they faced.

In the 90 countries that were surveyed, 60 had more young women in universities than men. In some areas there were surprises in that less developed countries surpassed "rich" countries.

Sudhir Shetty, co-director at the World Bank, said: "One example of how some gaps have quickly closed is the reduction of the number of children in their (a woman's) lifetime. What took the United States 100 years to achieve for a women to go from having six children to three took Zimbabwe about 30 years."

One worrying factor in the report was that women were still earning less than their male counterparts whether as employees or entrepreneurs. This gap was prevalent in both underdeveloped and rich countries.

"Even in Germany, an average women employee earns 60% of what a man earns. So if a man earns a dollar, a woman earns 60 cents," Shetty said.

Other challenges still faced by developing countries was the high rate of maternal death and the voice women had in both their families and communities.

Ana Maria Munoz Boodet, gender specialist at the World Bank, said: "In terms of the gap in salaries it has to do with the way markets view women.

"It could be that an employer has not had female workers and he believes that women are less productive," she said.

"In our interviews with women they said they are not being taken seriously, particularly if they have children because the employer believes they may not show up, (will) take maternity leave or be late."

Even Men can earn more than women but all the money endsup in the women's hands, it is very rare for a woman to cry that she is broke.

Women emancipation will always be ellusive as long as women want to "cherry pick" the good bits, they don't want equality in it's true sense, just the good bits. they still sell their companionship and sex to men, still expect men to subsidize them under the guise of "romance"......

If a woman does exatctly the same job I am doing, then of course...pay us the same, if not...then tell her to Voettsek

Bigups let it stay that way. Men need to feel better and on top of the world. It's a men thing. When a woman earns more than she needs she grows a beard buys rubber d**ck and start riding men.

Does this mean we, men, should aske for a salary reduction? the point is very same money we earn ends up in the hands of women.
