Steps to alleviate poverty

Feb 17, 2011 | Penwell Dlamini | 17 comments

THE chairperson of the National Development Agency, Malose Kekana, has called for different ways to alleviate poverty in the country

One thing we have to do is to tap into those initiatives and leverage the little money that we have so that we can reach more people.

Kekana was speaking at the appointment of the new NDA board at Thaba Ya Batswana, south of Johannesburg, this week.

The new board, chaired by Kekana, has 11 members, including chief executive officer Vuyelwa Nhlapo. It will serve for three years.

The NDA is a statutory body established to contribute towards eradicating poverty by funding civil society and strengthening their institutional capacity.

Social Development Minister Bathabile Dlamini, who attended the event, said the biggest challenge facing the NDA was that it funded organisations that later collapsed.

Dlamini said part of the work of the agency should be to relate to how it contributes to human capital development, "which is central to the growth and development of any nation".

Kekana said opportunities that would allow the NDA to think broadly were available.

"Right now the extent of our programmes is limited to the amount of money we have. But there is a lot of corporate social investment initiatives and enterprise development.

"One thing we have to do is to tap into those initiatives and leverage the little money that we have so that we can reach more people."

Kekana said a lot of money was spent on grants and 80percent of the budget went to indigent communities, "and we know that they spend it on food".

He said another approach was to use respected individuals within the communities to lead poverty alleviation programmes.

BikoLives

Malusi Kekana failed dismally when he was CEO of uMsobomvu to the extent that the ANCYL recalled him and change the name of that agency to NYDA! How he gets to be promoted to be chairman of NDA is of mystery to me? Its people like him who will contribute in turning South Africa to having a 'Tunisia day'! What a sad state of affairs we find our selves in where people are being rewarded for mediocricy! Someday the bones of OR Tambo and Sol Plaait will turn in their grave!

Well in S.A the system is such that the poor gets poorer and the rich gets richer. We were told that after apartheid we will have a government of the people by the people for the people but I guess by people they were referring to them: the guys at the top who keep appointing themselves to feast on tax payers money and making empty, rhetorical promises. I say we do a Tunisia day sometime soon! We are tired of the b.s we see on a a daily basis while South Africans suffer and live in abject poverty. It has been more than 10 years since the collapse of the evil empire: Apartheid and although much has changed, there is still a lot to be done for our people; meaning the blacks.

"Kekana has called for different ways to alliviate poverty" - The question is: He called for different ways from who?. Next thing they be consulting stakeholders on measures on to alliviate poverty and consult until Jesus comes back.

There are far to many agencies, entities, programmes in SA with the mandate to alliviate poverty but non I mean non whatsoever are able to alliviate poverty.

Go back to the Rural Areas and encourage people to go back to informal farming, it as simple as that.

Cry the beloved country, Mzantsi!!!!!!!!!!!!
