MBA students can now take a course in Broad-Based Black Economic Empowerment (BB-BEE).

The Gordon Institute for Business Studies (GIBS) and the National Empowerment Fund (NEF) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding and partnered to developed an elective module for MBA students.

NEF chief executive Philisiwe Buthelezi said: "South Africa has come up with a ground-breaking model. The NEF has accumulated considerable intellectual capital that can provide valuable content for such a module, which we are confident will benefit the leadership of corporate South Africa and the public service in the quest for achieving transformation for an inclusive economy."

The NEF has made a commitment of R1,2 million for the next three years.

The programme manager, Sam Tsima, said: "The programme is long overdue. We will design specific toolkits, and they might be sector specific."

Tsima said the module would be completed by September.

GIBS director Professor Nick Bidenell said: "Our philosophy is to partner with other institutions for practical projects. The module will contain practical case studies and ideas we need to build on for our country's sustainability.

"Our work will go beyond the MBA, we will work on research projects."
