Retailers cash in big time

RETAILERS are making a killing this festive season as many consumers rush to spend their bonuses and 13th cheques on toys that tickle their fancy.

One major retailer said sales had shown a substantial increase compared with last year.

Coffee machines are proving to be a popular buy for consumers.

"People love coffee machines that make cappuccinos and lattes and cost between R3,000 and R10,000," Hirsch's Home Store chief executive Allan Hirsch said.

"What is clear is that people are buying bigger things of high quality. Our sales have grown by 30% year-on-year."

Hirsch said slim, flat 3D LED TVs and docking stations for Apple and Samsung tablets and phones have also proven popular.

"Other popular products include Sony sound systems with double bass speakers."

Massmart spokesman Brian Leroni said DionWired had noticed that headphones were a huge trend this year.

"At Builders Warehouse DIY tool kits are big sellers while at Makro, Barbie dolls remain a favourite for girls."

General trends:

DionWired has seen gadgets such as the AR Drone and the Sphero gain popularity, while the new range of iPods have become sought-after items.

"People are integrating technology and decorating and are seeking products that marry functionality and decorative appeal such as the Smeg Retro range of cooking appliances and the K-Mix counter top appliances," he said. "Hot items at Makro include the Keter Cool Bar," Leroni said.
