CELEBRATED fashion designer Thula Sindi says he is honoured to be the Small Enterprise Development Agency Best Youth Entrepreneur.

Sindi, whose namesake label is worn by South Africa's A-listers, received the award at the annual awards of the Small Enterprise Development Agency, which provides a platform for young entrepreneurs.

The agency is an affiliate of the Department of Trade and Industry that ensures a framework for enterprise development and integrates government-funded small enterprise support.

"I am ecstatic and humbled by this accolade and investment in my brand. This investment will provide me with a valuable foundation to augment my fashion business and ensure a lucrative, self-sustaining future," the 28-year-old said.

He said he was happy that his years of hard work and aspirations to be a successful fashion designer were finally paying off.

Sindi, who is known for a no-nonsense approach to his business, is one of the few designers who refuse to give their clothes to celebrities for free.

He won a R15,000 cash prize and a laptop and software to be at the forefront of enhanced business systems. He was also given a Small Enterprise Development Agency business support voucher for R60,000.

Sindi is a household name in the fashion business. He has showcased his work at national fashion weeks.

Africa Fashion International chairwoman Dr Precious Moloi-Motsepe said Sindi was a deserving recipient.

"Thula has always been a remarkable designer and entrepreneur, dedicated to not only providing the latest in trends but also spearheading his business to new heights. We commend this choice in entrepreneurship excellence," she said.

Sindi has created a contemporary brand primarily focused on supplying career wear and occasion wear. Established in 2005, the brand has drawn a loyal following with its aim to create timeless, elegant and sophisticated pieces.

In the space of five years, Sindi has managed to build a trusted fashion brand that employs 28 women and more through outsourcing to their co-op. His clothes are also sold at Edgars.
