KwaZulu-Natal premier brings in engineers, planners, architects, project managers and lawyers

KwaZulu-Natal premier Zweli Mkhize has announced that a team of experts have been brought together to oversee the provincial government’s infrastructure projects.

“We are happy that this team has been formed. It will ensure that our infrastructure projects are implemented properly,” Mkhize told reporters in Durban.

The team of 18 people consisted of engineers, planners, architects, project managers and lawyers, he said.

“We have formed this team because many projects failed because there was no proper monitoring. Some houses had to be demolished because of poor workmanship,” said Mkhize.

The team had been formed by the finance department and would be used on the projects of various departments and municipalities, finance MEC Ina Cronje said during the briefing.

“This team will help us to do better on delivery of infrastructure which is important for economic growth and the creation of jobs,” she said.

About R18 billion rand is spent on infrastructure projects in KwaZulu-Natal every year.

“With this team, we want to make this province a model of spending wisely,” said Cronje.

The team would also help to mentor emerging contractors doing work for the government.
